My first time at the Durham Gala

Posted: 18-07-23

On Saturday the 8th July we attended the 137th gala, where we promoted our range of personal and community welfare services, answered queries and took referrals for the support we can offer.

Chloe, our Marketing and Communications assistant, attended the event this year for the first time, below is what she had to say about the event.

“When we began planning for the 2023 Durham Gala, I jumped at the chance to attend. I had never attended the Durham Gala before and was extremely excited about the prospect.

On the day of the gala, my colleagues Stacey, Jay and I got to the field early and got to work. The sun shone down on us as we carried our boxes full of goodies across the grass and we began setting out our stall - ready for the crowds to descend, as the banners made their way to the grounds.

Followed by the sounds of a stomping brass band, we watched as the first banner arrived on site and with them, the droves of people.

I was surprised at how early the event got busy and we were rushed off our feet from half past nine, as attendees made their way over to our tent at the far end of the field.

Armed with information flyers, goodies, and the will to provide as much information as we could to those in need, we greeted those who came to us and gave information on how to access our services.

The rain came down around lunchtime, but this did not dampen the spirits of the crowds. Umbrellas went up and the lively atmosphere remained, as many now congregated near the stage to hear the guest speakers.

It was a fantastic day, and an honor to share the sense of community with so many and honor the heritage of the mining industry.

It was also wonderful to meet each one of you, and particularly lovely to hear some really positive stories, about how CISWO has helped people in the past, and to know just how beneficial and required, our services still are.

I very much look forward to attending again next year.”
